Spider Pest Control and Exterminators
Is there a species more unfairly demonized than the spider? It’s a wonder how anyone can hate their eight splintery legs, or their black eyes or… okay, now that we’re saying it out loud, we can see the point.
It’s not like we’re asking you to marry a spider, but for the most part, they’re more frightening than dangerous. Out of all 35,000 species in the world, only two spiders present significant danger in San Diego County, Orange County and Riverside County.
Dangerous Spiders in Southern California
Black Widow Spiders ( Latrodectus spp )
Perhaps the most notorious spider is the black widow. Highly recognizable by its 1.5″ length, a black or brown color, severe legs, and its trademark – the rust-colored hourglass shape that adorns its abdomen. The female is the one to look out for, since the male’s venom becomes almost benign when it reaches maturity.
But those ladies do bite, and the symptoms are a lot less cool than the super strength and agility that Peter Parker received after being bit by a spider. If you a black widow bites you, contact a physician immediately, otherwise you may experience symptoms of increased body temperature and blood pressure, sweating and nausea. Bites are rarely fatal, except occasionally in very small children.

Brown Recluse Spiders
True to their name, brown recluse spiders do their best to stay out of sight. In fact, they’re so rare that there have actually been only two confirmed sightings in San Diego and Orange Counties’ recorded histories. Statistically, you’re more likely to win the lottery than be bitten by a brown recluse. However, the fear surrounding them is not unwarranted – both males and females can inject venom when they bite, which doesn’t hurt and often goes unnoticed.
Symptoms of a brown recluse bite include necrosis (dead tissue) and open, ulcerating sores. So, these spiders pretty much turn you into a first-stage zombie. Joking aside, these bites are very serious and those affected should go to an emergency room immediately. An anti-toxin has been developed but it’s not readily available.
Other Scary-Looking Spiders
They’re everywhere, but they don’t pose a threat. In fact, some are beneficial to your garden and keep other annoying insects at bay. All spiders are attracted to moisture.
